How Forever Free Began
A journey that began in 2013..
The Journey
My journey toward creating Forever Free Elephant Sanctuary began in 2013, during my very first trip to Thailand.
I traveled to Chiang Mai with a friend, and one of the experiences we decided to have was visiting an elephant riding camp. At the time, I was completely unaware of the reality behind elephant tourism. I knew nothing about the treatment of elephants, and I had no idea that riding them could be harmful or inhumane.
But even though I didn't understand what I was seeing, something about it didn't feel right.
I remember looking into the eyes of one of the elephants before we rode it. There was something I couldn't explain. Its eyes looked glossy and empty, almost as if there was no life or sparkle behind them. I didn't know why I felt that way, but I couldn't shake the feeling.
We went ahead with the ride, and at the time, it was something we enjoyed. But afterward, I watched as the elephant was taken away and chained up outside in the heat, with no shade or comfortable environment to retreat to.
I remember thinking, "Wow. This is really terrible."
That moment stayed with me.
There Was a Sparkle
During that same trip, I visited several elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai that were focused on treating elephants ethically and allowing them to live in a more natural environment. What I saw there completely changed my perspective.
I looked into the eyes of those elephants, and the difference was remarkable.
There was no emptiness or gloss. There was a sparkle. They looked alert, relaxed, and happy. You could see their personalities. And yes, believe it or not, you really can see an elephant smile.
For the first time, I understood what an elephant could look like when it was being treated with compassion and given the freedom to simply be an elephant.
That experience planted an idea in my mind that never really went away:
Someday, I wanted to create a sanctuary of my own.
I Wanted The Elephants to Come First.
I wanted to build a place where elephants could live safely, freely, and with the dignity they deserve—a place inspired by the ethical sanctuaries I had visited, but with a vision of taking the experience even further.
I began imagining a sanctuary where people could experience elephants without riding them, forcing them to perform, or taking them out of their natural way of life. A place where visitors could stay overnight, surrounded by nature, and simply watch elephants being elephants.
I envisioned beautiful private accommodations—eventually even pool villas—built around the sanctuary, allowing guests to wake up and see these incredible animals living in a peaceful, natural environment.
But most importantly, I wanted the elephants to come first.
What Started as a Vacation..
That original experience in 2013 was brief, but it changed the way I saw elephants forever. What started as a vacation experience became something much bigger: a dream to create a place where elephants could finally live free from exploitation, free from unnecessary chains, and free to live the life they were meant to live.
That dream became Forever Free Elephant Sanctuary.
Let Elephants Be Elephants.
